Katie Kruger has taken an unusual path from the rough-neck oil fields of Kuparuk, Alaska to being a young policy-minded CEO of the largest commercial real estate association in the country, to now leading a tier one market for the global commercial real estate giant CBRE. Raised in rural Alaska and facing challenging family issues and responsibilities well beyond a typical teenager, her decision to join the nearly exclusive male workforce in Alaska’s remote oil fields was based on her motivation to go to college and find the next rung in front of her.
Early in her career, Kruger worked for Norris Design as part of the teams planning Colorado’s most iconic master planned communities. Later she drove marketing, advertising & PR campaigns for McStain Neighborhoods and was an account executive for a national advertising agency. As she climbed, Kruger committed to giving back and has met with more than 1,100 young people in an effort to share networks and help others find their own rungs.
Kruger was honored as a 2016 PowerBook Award recipient by the Denver Business Journal, and received the ACE Award from the National Association of Realtors for innovative management processes and extraordinary member service in 2012 and 2014. Kruger served in leadership for the Denver Metro Chamber Legislative Policy Council from 2017 to 2019. She is also a professor at the University of Colorado Denver, where her classes are comprised of 80% diverse first-in-family educated talent and she strives to connect each student with their first job opportunity before graduation. Today, she serves on the Board and Policy Council at the Downtown Denver Partnership and recently joined the board for Colorado Succeeds, an organization that also believes in a school day that better mirrors the work day.
